PURCHASE AN OPEN EDITION PRINT The Red Fox is one of the most recognizable and adaptable species of wildlife found in Canada and they play a significant role in the country's ecosystems as both predators and scavengers. They are not considered endangered or threatened in Canada and can thrive in various environments, including urban areas. However, their populations can be affected by factors such as habitat loss and diseases like sarcoptic mange. Known for their intelligence and cunning hunting techniques, Red Foxes are mainly nocturnal and solitary for most of the year, but may form temporary pair bonds during the breeding season, which typically occurs from late winter to early spring. Females, called vixens, give birth to their litters in underground dens, burrows or hollow logs. A litter can consist of anywhere from 1 to 12 kits, but the average is 4 to 6. The mother cares for her kits until they are old enough to fend for themselves, usually about 7-8 months.
