All Hummingbirds have beaks that are specialized for feeding on flower nectar, but all species are capable of also consuming flying insects and spiders. Named for the prominent humming sound its wings make when beating, the “hum” is unique among flying animals, compared to the whine of mosquitoes, buzz of bees, and 'whoosh' of larger birds. Hummingbirds build a cup-shaped nest for the two eggs they lay and, depending on the species, the nest varies in size from smaller than half a walnut shell to several centimeters in diameter. Spider silk and lichen are often used to bind the nesting material together and secure the structure. The spider silk allows the nest to expand as the young hummingbirds grow. | ||
