A member of the Tit family, the Black-Capped Chickadee is a small, nonmigratory, North American songbird and is the provincial bird of New Brunswick. They’re known for their ability to preserve energy by lowering their body from 42°C to 30°C during cold Canadian winter nights, to help them preserve energy and for their good spatial memory, which helps them to relocate their caches of stored food. Chickadees are also known to tolerate human presence to a much greater degree than most other species do and, during the winter especially, many individuals will readily accept seed held in a person's hand. Winter survival rates of these little birds are very much affected by access to supplemental food and Chickadees with easy access to well-maintained bird feeders are twice as likely to survive the frigid months than those without such access. This difference in survival rates occurs primarily during severe weather when the temperature drops below −18 °C for more than five days – which is fairly typical here in Ontario. So be kind this winter and feed the Chickadees! | ||
